DIY Safety & Participation Waiver

The DIY Safety Rules (The "Code")

When tackling garage door repairs or installations, safety should always be your top priority. Follow these essential rules to ensure a safe and successful DIY experience.

Rule #1: Use the Right Tools.

Never—under any circumstances—use a screwdriver, a rebar pin, or a makeshift rod to wind a spring. These slip, and when they do, the spring wins. We rent professional, heat-treated winding bars for a reason. Use them.

Rule #2: Respect the Tension.

Always assume the spring is "loaded" and ready to move. Treat every component—the cables, the drums, and the bottom brackets—as if they are under 500 lbs of pressure. Because they are.

Rule #3: Clear the Area.

This isn't a spectator sport. Keep kids, pets, and curious neighbors out of the garage while you're working on the springs or cables. If a cable snaps, it moves faster than you can react.

Rule #4: If You’re Stuck, Call Us.

There is no shame in stopping. If you get halfway through and realize you’re in over your head, or if something doesn't "feel" right—STOP. Don't force it. Call us at 816-745-1372. We have a professional backup team for a reason.

Before You DIY: Know the Risks

Garage door work carries real risks. Improper installation, repair, or maintenance can result in serious injury or death. Springs under high tension, heavy doors, and complex mechanical systems require knowledge, proper tools, and careful execution.

At U-Install Garage Doors, we support DIY when done safely. This waiver outlines the real dangers, our safety rules, tool requirements, and the legal agreements that protect both you and us.

Understanding the Real Hazards

Garage door systems involve multiple critical safety concerns:

  • Torsion Spring Failure – Springs are under extreme tension and can snap with lethal force. Mishandling causes serious injury or death.
  • Crushing Force – A falling garage door can weigh hundreds of pounds. Improper installation allows it to drop without warning.
  • Pinch and Entanglement – Moving parts, cables, and chains create entrapment and crushing hazards.
  • Electrical Hazards – Opener installation and repairs involve electrical circuits that can cause shock or fire.
  • Falls and Structural Damage – Installation requires working at height and proper wall/roof anchoring to prevent collapse.

U-Install's Safety Rules

If you rent tools or buy parts from U-Install for DIY work, you agree to follow these rules:

  • Never work alone. A second person must be present and aware of the hazards.
  • Wear safety glasses and work gloves at all times.
  • Disconnect the opener and block the door in place before any work.
  • Never touch or attempt to repair springs—always call a professional for spring work.
  • Use only the tools specified for each task. Improvised tools cause accidents.
  • Follow all manufacturer instructions and local building codes.
  • Stop work immediately if anything feels unsafe or unusual.

Required Tools & Rental Agreement

To support safe DIY work, U-Install provides tool rentals for specific tasks. Renting a tool means:

  • You understand the tool's purpose, operation, and limitations.
  • You are responsible for any damage to the rental tool caused by misuse or neglect.
  • You return the tool clean and in the same condition as received.
  • You assume all risk of injury from tool use. U-Install is not liable for injuries, regardless of cause.

Legal Waiver & Release
